Introducción
Este libro se propone iniciar al hablante de lengua española
en el conocimiento reflexivo de esta. Supone en él, como es
lógico, un previo conocimiento práctico, una capacidad de usar
el idioma: nadie puede reflexionar sobre una cosa que desconoce.
Pero supone también un previo desconocimiento teórico, que no
significa necesariamente ignorancia total de la gramática, sino
un simple mal conocimiento de ella. Y supone también, sin duda,
un interés en el lector hacia esta función respiratoria de su mente
que es el idioma.
Como no es un libro de texto ni está destinado a especialistas,
hay en cada párrafo un esfuerzo para acercarse al lector. Todo
está escrito en el lenguaje más transparente y sencillo, rehuyendo,
hasta donde es posible, el tecnicismo. Naturalmente, es inevitable
emplear un mínimo vocabulario técnico; pero se ha procurado que sea
siempre el más accesible.
Conviene advertir, sin embargo, que la utilización de ciertos
términos tradicionales (sustantivo, sujeto, predicado, complemento
indirecto, etc.) pocas veces significa conformidad con las doctrinas
tradicionales. Por eso, es importante para el buen entendimiento de
estas páginas, asegurarse de cuál es el valor que aquí se explica
para cada una de las etiquetas gramaticales empleadas, no solamente
las que puedan parecer nuevas, sino las que puedan parecer
conocidas.
Este libro no es un compendio de ninguna gramática «oficial», ni
tampoco pretende una síntesis más o meno armonizada de las varias
doctrinas gramaticales circulantes. Es, en sus modestas dimensiones,
una visión general de la lengua española, por fuera y por dentro,
donde cada una de las piezas ha sido pensada de nuevo a la luz de
un sistema unitario. Para obtener esa imagen coherente, el examen
de la lengua se ha efectuado desde un punto de vista sincrónico,
aplicando la lupa al tiempo presente. Y se ha seguido, en la
descripción de los hechos del lenguaje, un criterio uniforme,
tomando como punto de partida la manera de actuar cada elemento
dentro del conjunto analizando, para cada uno, sus tres dimensiones:
forma, función y sentido.
Aunque la estructura del idioma (sonidos, frases y palabras)
constituye el punto central de atención del libro, ese entramado
se enmarca dentro de una serie de capítulos que sirven para situar
con exactitud el fenómeno «lengua española» a través de distintas
perspectivas. Tras unas nociones generales sobre el lenguaje, se
expone la situación actual del idioma español en el mundo y el
panorama lingüístico de España en el pasado y en el presente, en
tanto que un último capítulo plantea algunas cuestiones principales
de sociología de la lengua. Con todo ello, aunque sea en forma muy
somera, se ofrece una visión suficientemente amplia de todo aquello
que interesa saber al hablante de lengua española que se acerca,
curioso, a conocerla un poco más en su intimidad.
La presente edición de bolsillo de la GRAMÁTICA ESENCIAL DEL ESPAÑOL
contiene el texto íntegro de la segunda edición en formato grande.
Solamente la bibliografía, que en aquella era bastante extensa, se
ha redactado aquí de nuevo, reduciéndola a un mínimo número de
títulos indispensables, bien por su importancia intrínseca, bien
por su utilidad para el lector a quien va dedicado este libro.
En esta cuarta edición de bolsillo se ha actualizado la
bibliografía.

Introduction
This book intends to initiate in the Spanish speaker a reflexive
understanding of his language. It presupposes, as is logical, a
previous practical knowledge of and a capacity to use the language:
no one can reflect upon a thing which is unknown to him. But it
also presupposes a previous lack of theoretical knowledge, which
does not necessarily signify a total ignorance of grammar, but
simply a poor knowledge of it. It also presupposes, without a
doubt, that the reader has an interest in this breathing function
of the mind that we call language.
Since it is not a textbook or a book written for specialists, in
each paragraph there is an effort to bring the material close to
the reader. It is written in the most transparent and simple
language, avoiding technical terms wherever possible. While the
employment of a minimum of technical vocabulary is unavoidable,
this has provided that the book as always as accessible as
possible.
It should be advised, however, that the use of certain traditional
terms (noun, subject, predicate, indirect complement, etc.) rarely
signifies conformity with traditional doctrines. For this reason,
it is important for the full understanding of the book to assure
oneself of the value with which each of the grammatical norms
employed are explained here, not only those that can seem new but
also those that can seem familiar.
This book is not a compendium of any «official» grammar, nor does
it pretend to be a harmonic synthesis of the various circulating
grammatical doctrines. It is, in its modest dimensions, a general
vision of the Spanish language, inside and out, where each of its
pieces has been contemplated anew in the light of a united system.
In order to obtain this coherent image, our examination of the
language has been executed from a synchronic point of view,
applying a magnifying glass to the present time; and in consequence,
in the description of the facts of the language, a uniform criteria
taking as its jumping off point the manner in which each element
acts inside an analyzed whole. For each one, its three dimensions:
form, function y meaning.
Although the structure of the language (sounds, phrases
and words) constitutes the central point of the book’s attention,
that schema is framed inside a series of chapters which serve to
situate the «Spanish language» phenomenon with exactness across
distinct perspectives. Applying general notions about language, the
present situation of Spanish in the world and the linguistic
panorama of Spain in the past and in the present is exposed, so
much so that the final chapter plants some principle sociological
questions about the language. With all this, whether it be in a
very superficial form, a sufficiently ample vision is offered of
that which a curious speaker of the Spanish language would be
interested to more intimately know.
The present pocket edition of ESSENTIAL GRAMMAR OF SPANISH contains
the entire text of the second large format edition. Only the
bibliography, which was quite extensive in the second edition,
has been rewritten here, reducing it to a minimum number of
indispensable titles useful for their intrinsic value and for
their usefulness to the reader to which this book is dedicated.
The bibliography of this fourth pocket edition has been updated.
